EuropeNow Film Festival Madrid

EuropeNow Film Festival is an initiative of CES: Council for European Studies at Columbia University in the city of New York & WoFF: World of Film International Festival in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. 

The second EuropeNow Film Festival is set to take place at the Artistic Metropol Madrid, Spain June 20 – 21 2019, coinciding with the 26th International Conference of Europeanists at the Universidad Carlos III. 

The second edition of EuropeNow Film Festival continues to focus on contemporary European topics, which include but are not limited to fiction, documentary, animated and art short and feature films of any length that depict important aspects of Europe’s present reality.

  • Third Kind by Yorgos Zois | Greece | 2018 | 30 min | Earth has been abandoned long time now and the human race has found refuge in outer space. Three archeologists return to Earth to investigate where a mysterious five tone signal is coming from… 


  • Transit by Mariam El Marakeshy | Turkey / Greece | 2018 | 27 min | Transit is a groundbreaking documentary bringing powerful intimate stories of young refugees who risked their lives crossing the Aeagean sea to Europe, only to get trapped on the Greek island of Lesvos, with no future and closed borders. It was supposed only to be their “transit” stop but it is where they ended.


  • Stolen by Dean Marriott | Germany / Spain | 2018 | 19 min | Inspired by the Stolen Babies Scandal which took place in Spain during the Franco era, this bilingual German-Spanish short film brings ethics, religion, language and the exploitation of vulnerable women into question.

  • A Balkan Noir by Dražen Kuljanin | Sweden / Montenegro | 2018 | 70 min |  It has been five years since Nina’s daughter went missing and only during the cigarette breaks do we get to follow her hunt for the perpetrator as she returns to Montenegro for one last time. A revenge told in 20 cigarettes.


  • Bonboné by Rakan Mayasi | Palestine / Lebanon | 2017 | 15 min | A Palestinian couple resorts to an unusual way to conceive as the husband is detained in an Israeli jail where visits are restricted. *Out of competition. 


The mission of the Council for European Studies (CES) is to produce, support, and recognize outstanding, multi-disciplinary research on Europe through a wide range of programs and initiatives. These include fellowships, grants, publications, awards, conferences and meetings, public lectures and symposia, as well as direct research and artistic collaboration. CES is particularly committed to supporting research that can play a critical role in understanding and applying the lessons of European history and integration to contemporary problems, including those in the areas of global security, sustainability, environmental stewardship, and democracy. 

WoFF: World of Film International Festival is an annual film festival based in Glasgow, Scotland, UK and currently in its sixth edition. Our main focus is to promote independent international cinema and new talent from Scotland, the UK , Europe and beyond. Our aim is to bring local and Scottish audiences together with filmmakers, producers, artists and cinema enthusiasts from all around the world, in an attempt to discover new talent, showcase their work and generate ideas for future projects. WoFF is a non-profit organisation bringing audiences a step closer to international independent cinema and giving voice to young artists.
