Mezquite’s Heart (Corazón de Mezquite) by Ana Laura Calderón | The Female Perspective | Mexico | 2019 | 72 mins | Starring: Ianis Guerrero, Mayrin Buitimea, Alberta Yocupicio, Julio Valenzuela | Lucia is a yoreme girl, an indigenous people in Mexico. She wants to play the harp, but there is a problem: the harp symbolizes women and, according to her people’s tradition, women cannot touch one another. Her father, Fidel, who is a harpist, forbids her to play. Secretly, however, Lucia is taught by her grandfather. A community party is coming, but Fidel is injured. There is no one to play the harp at the celebration, and Lucia has to make a decision.
About the director: Ana Laura Calderón is a Mexican producer, director and editor and a graduate from EICTV. As director and producer she ventured into documentary with the feature The Island Of Youth and the short films Always On My Mind, To Die and recently Terranova. In 2017 she shot her first feature film Drawing The Sky.
